We all need a good night’s sleep to maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Sleep replenishes our energy, repairs our mind, organises and stores the memories of the day before. More importantly, it will hopefully leave us rested, alert and ready to face the day ahead. But if you're anything like us, you're probably wondering if you're getting enough sleep and what is enough sleep actually means? The amount of sleep you need varies for each person and is affected by several factors including your age, sex and health. Sleep cycles vary as we get older.
How you feel during the day can determine if you are getting the right amount for you. According to a survey carried out by The Sleep Council, the following is the recommended number of hours we should sleep by age group:
AGE/HOURS PER DAY
|Age||Hours per day||Age||Hours per day|
HOW MUCH SLEEP DO WE ACTUALLY GET BY REGION OF THE UK? (Figures from sleepcouncil.org.uk)
|North West||6:36||Northern Ireland||6:19|
HOW MANY HOURS SLEEP DO PEOPLE HAVE ON AVERAGE AROUND THE WORLD? (Sleepcouncil.org.uk)
Of the 44 countries who responded, here are the results;
|New Zealand||7:30||The Philippines||6:22|
To make the most of bedtime, create good habits. Reducing your caffeine and alcohol intake can help. Follow a regular sleep schedule and create a comfortable sleeping environment. Invest in the best mattress, Duvet, Pillows and Bed Linen your pocket will allow. For added comfort and support, invest in a mattress topper. Finally, protect your pillows, mattress and topper with mattress and pillow protectors.
